Monstera barrieri

Monstera barrieri

Out of all the Monstera I've matured out, Monstera barrieri was by far one of the most challenging to mature. This enigmatic species is unique for a myriad of reasons and goes through one of the most dramatic polymorphic changes in the genus. As a juvenile plant, barrieri is a chain of identical internodes sporting velvety, upward-facing oblong-lanceolate leaves. This species is exceptionally selective as to where it will crown & mature on the trunk. Once they reach that point, internodes shorten notably and leaves expand lengthwise as the first perforations appear. At first, adolescent foliage retains its oblong shape and the fenestrations don't break the edge. Fully mature leaves break the edge fully and can contort in a myriad of shapes & directions as they harden off. At this stage, the interprimary space widens & the extremely narrow lobes lengthen. Easily one of the most fascinating and rewarding Monstera species to mature
